An important aspect of the project «Deciphering Lakeside Settlements» is the analysis of fish remains from the site «Küsnacht-Immensee Dorfplatz». Although fishing would naturally have played a major role for lakeside settlements, few aspects of the prehistoric economy have been so little researched and understood. We therefore aim to reconstruct the range of fish species utilised and answer questions regarding the significance of fishing, the fishing grounds used and the fishing seasons. Together with our partner disciplines, we are analysing whether evidence can be found of differentiated, seasonal fishing practices and a specialised economic focus within the settlement, and whether these also characterised fishing at Immensee Dorfplatz. This may also help to clarify why, unlike many other lakeside settlements, there is as yet no evidence of open-water fishing in the fish remains from Immensee Dorfplatz, even though the settlement would have been ideally situated for this.
Another and, currently entirely new approach is the combination of archaeozoological investigations and sediment genetics (sedaDNA).
